I don’t think I realize just how privileged I am to be born in America, or that I fully understand the scope of what that means.
You see, I am the fourth daughter of my parents, and I am loved by my family. But if I had been born in another place, perhaps somewhere like Asia, there is a good chance that I might not even have been born.
You ask, “Why?”
In Asia, girls are often considered worthless, merely another mouth to feed, and another dowry to pay; so when the expecting mother finds out her child is a girl, there is a good chance that abortion will follow.
Life is not kind to a girl born in Asia. For many, ending up in prostitution is more likely than getting an education. If a girl reaches the marriageable age, life does not end happily ever after. A dowry is expected, and if the amount received by the groom is not satisfactory, the new husband may take matters into his own hands. Every year in South Asia, there are anywhere between 4,000 to 25,000 reported cases of bride burnings.
Life is so dark for these women. Life brings tragedy to millions of women at every turn; it is no wonder that suicide is the leading cause of death for young women in India.
And then, if a woman’s husband dies, she will be blamed for his death, and will be viewed as a curse on her family.
For millions of women in Asia, life is hopeless.
Yet God is bringing glorious hope to the women of Asia! He has not disregarded their helpless estate.
“Veil of Tears: Hope is on the Way” is a new documentary on the plight of women in Asia that shows the stark hopelessness in contrast with the bright hope that God is bringing. Through the ministry of Gospel for Asia supported women missionaries, millions of women are now receiving hope. And you know what is cool? “Proceeds of this film will be donated toward our continued efforts to change lives on a social, educational, health and spiritual level.” -Gospel for Asia
